Tonight on our way to the car from her grandparents, Elly was quick to take note of the moon and the first star of the night as she exclaimed - MOON! Quickly followed by "Star light, star bright.... murmur, murmur and she mumbled the rest. Yet continued to talk loudly about the stars and the moons. Not just loudly, but quickly too. It was hard to keep track of what she was saying, thus hard to translate what she was saying into understandable english. I eventually caught on that the kid was insistent that she CATCH a star.
When asked how she would catch a star, her response was quick and simple - With a fishing Wod. When asked what she would do with said star, it would go in her pocket.
Seriously? When did we get a kid that not only spoke, but made sense, had an imagination and carried more common sense then any adult I know. - Of course one would catch stars with fishing rods and they'd be easy to keep in our pockets to play with whenever it suited us.
Her imagination doesn't stop there. While we were up north she turned a side coffee table into an oven and cooked cakes and cupcakes and cookies and muffins and even the odd carrot for all of us. She didn't need any props, just her imagination and god forbid you didn't participate and eat your imaginary food that she'd slaved over. Each item took "20mins" to cook according to the chef, but I'd argue that it was more like 20 seconds.
Concepts, words, thoughts, arguments, discussions.... she can hold her own. She knows when to play "dumb" and just repeat yes to every question. And she knows when to speak up and tell us like it is. Her imagination takes her on amazing little adventures and we're incredibly lucky to be able to come along for the ride.
Hide and seek continues to be a BIG favourite in our house. Like most kids her age, hiding for the most part is her not being able to see us, but she's getting pretty good with finding spots and has taken a liking to being the seeker and not just the hider. Although my favourite is playing hide and seek in the car where she just takes her blanket and throws it over her eyes and has clearly disappeared.
Her fits of giggles are contagious and I do what I can to ensure that she has at least one uncontrollable fit of giggles once a day. I've decided it's on the top of my list of things to make sure she has a great childhood.
As we ease our way back into routine after the holidays I'm sad that I'm going to be missing the hours of fun and play that we've been able to enjoy, but at the same time I'm eager to get this learning train on the go.
It's so rewarding having things that we love in our lives, but hard to try and keep them all balanced just right.
